Understanding Head banging

Head banging is quite often seen in children on the autism spectrum. The cause very often is a sensory processing disorder, most likely that of the vestibular system.

Stopping a child from banging their head does not stop the child’s distress that is causing him to bang his head. Yes, it would save him from injuring his head. But the sensory issue still has to be taken care of….it is just continuing to build up!
There are some good suggestions in this article. Also brain gym exercises help with regulating the senses. Regular therapy help keep the child’s sensory processing systems functioning as smoothly as possible!
